Learn more about the mushrooms used in our products.
How they're produced
The mushroom extracts used in Little Mushroom Co. products are made from certified organic mushrooms, grown naturally on substrate materials native to each species—just as nature intended. Unlike lab-grown alternatives cultivated in sterile environments on grain or rice, the mushrooms are farmed in greenhouses with natural light and fresh air.
How they're processed
We use mushroom extract powders in our products to maximize bioavailability while ensuring our final product still tastes great for you to enjoy!
The process of creating the mushroom extract powder begins with grinding the fruiting body of the mushroom into a coarse raw material. This material undergoes multiple rounds of hot water extraction to ensure that all beneficial compounds are fully drawn out. For certain mushrooms like reishi and chaga, an additional alcohol extraction step is included to help extract fat-soluable compounds from the mushroom. After extraction, the spent mushroom material is discarded, leaving behind only the nutrient-rich liquid. This liquid is then concentrated to a specific extract ratio and spray-dried into a fine powder, resulting in a highly potent supplement. The mushroom extracts used in our products have an 8:1 extract ratio.
Consuming a concentrated extract delivers a higher dose of the most bioactive compounds in a smaller amount, making supplementation more efficient. Since the mushroom fibre and insoluble beta-glucans are removed during the process, only the soluble beta-glucans—recognized for their immune-supporting properties—remain.
How they're tested
To ensure the highest quality and safety, the mushroom extract powders used in our products undergo rigorous testing, including:
- Physical Testing: Assessing appearance, tap density, and moisture levels to maintain consistency and stability.
- Active Compound Analysis: Measuring Beta-(1,3)(1,6)-glucan content to ensure potency and efficacy.
- Microbiological Testing: Screening for contaminants such as yeast, mold, coliform bacteria, E. coli, Staphylococcus, Salmonella, and total plate count.
- Heavy Metals Testing: Detecting and controlling levels of lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury to ensure compliance with safety standards.
These comprehensive tests help uphold the highest standards of purity, potency, and safety, delivering a product you can trust.
Why we only use the fruiting body of the mushroom
Little Mushroom Co. products use only the fruiting body of the mushroom.
Many mushroom products on the market are made from "mycelium on grain" or "mycelium biomass." While mycelium is a crucial part of the fungal life cycle, it serves a different function—it acts as the root system, spreading through a substrate like grain to absorb nutrients. This often results in a product that is mostly grain filler with very little actual mycelium, let alone any mushroom. Unfortunately, some companies take this "mycelium biomass" and sell it as a "mushroom" supplement, misleading consumers into thinking they are getting the full benefits of medicinal mushrooms. To ensure maximum potency and effectiveness, always choose products made from 100% fruiting bodies.
